Areas I cover in North London
I work across the whole of North London from a studio in Shoreditch, twenty minutes from Islington by bus and closer by bike. Islington sends me more bookings than anywhere else north of the river: Upper Street weddings, terraced house families, and enough restaurant work that I know which tables catch window light after 4pm. Camden means markets, live music venues and industrial units turned into studios; parking is a lottery, so I plan to arrive by tube.
Highgate means period houses with narrow staircases, and I’ve carried lighting stands up three flights more than once. I now pack lighter for anything above a ground floor flat. Hampstead is the Heath, mostly: family portraits at golden hour in summer, though by late September that light has gone by 7pm and I schedule around it.
Crouch End has a village feel and good independent cafés for branding shoots that need a background with some life in it. Finsbury Park sits on three tube lines, which makes it the easiest place in North London to reach at short notice. Stoke Newington is Victorian conversions and small gardens, useful for family shoots when the flat itself is too tight for a tripod.

What I shoot most in North London
Four kinds of work make up most North London bookings: family portraits, weddings, branding shoots and independent restaurants. Families dominate because of the housing here, a lot of first family homes bought in Islington, Highgate and Stoke Newington once the second child arrives. I’d argue Highgate and Stoke Newington are undervalued for family portraits compared with Islington; the gardens are bigger and the light isn’t blocked by four storeys of terrace.
Weddings cluster around the parks and a handful of licensed venues; couples like the Heath and Highgate Woods for photos even when the ceremony is elsewhere. Branding work has grown the most over the past few years, mostly small studios and shops in Camden and Crouch End wanting a website refresh rather than a full campaign. Restaurants are a steady stream too, independent kitchens booking me for menus, interiors and the odd social reel. Places I return to often: Hampstead Heath, Kenwood House, Highgate Woods, Alexandra Palace, Waterlow Park, Primrose Hill, Union Chapel, Fenton House, Clissold Park, Barnsbury Square and Camden Lock.
Hampstead Heath gives the best open light in the borough, especially the fields near Parliament Hill in early morning before the joggers arrive. Kenwood House has strict rules on filming and flash near the building itself, rules that change depending on which part of the grounds you’re in, so confirm directly with the venue rather than take my word for it.
Alexandra Palace is enormous and the light inside the Palm Court shifts hard through the day, which changes how I plan a wedding timeline there. Union Chapel is one of the few striking indoor wedding spaces this far north, though its low light means flash needs agreeing with the venue in advance.
Getting there: travel, parking and timing
North London sits inside the ULEZ boundary, so my van meets the standard and that cost never lands on your invoice. The congestion charge doesn’t reach this far north; it stops well south, around the Euston Road, so it’s rarely a factor here.
Parking is the real obstacle. Islington and Camden both run residents-only bays that catch visitors within minutes, so for anything central I’d rather arrive by tube than fight for a space. Most photographers will tell you to always leave the car at home in London; I think that’s overcautious for kit-heavy jobs like weddings, where a car parked a short walk away beats two tube changes carrying camera bags and a light stand.
Hampstead and Highgate have more give, though weekends near the Heath fill fast. For a shoot on the Heath or in Highgate Woods, I arrive thirty minutes early to find the light and a route in. Every job quotes prices with travel included, with no separate mileage charge inside the M25.
Recent work in North London
A two-day Highgate wedding that moved indoors an hour before the ceremony when rain came in; the couple still got their group shot on the steps between showers. A branding session for a Crouch End coffee roaster, shot early before opening so the shop was empty. A family portrait on Hampstead Heath in October, timed for 4pm because the light was already going by five.
That’s the trade-off with autumn bookings outdoors: golden hour is real but short, and on a wet November afternoon an indoor session beats gambling on the Heath, even though outdoor light usually looks better.
